Aeroplane reading, Mezza Italiana

Location: Brisbane International Airport (BNE)

Time: 11:22 am

Book: Mezza Italiana by Zoe Boccabella

Price: $27.26, duty free

Note: Waiting for Air New Zealand flight to Aukland, with a connection to LAX

I had planned on reading only second hand books during this trip, but realized upon arrival at the airport that I had forgotten not only my toothbrush but also my reading material.

A dear friend had given me a copy of Under the Tuscan Sun, and told me to abandon it when finished. Oh well, the Tuscan sun will still be shining next month when I get back.

So, a quick trip to the aeroport kiosk solved my print-less state.

Two tomes were weighed up (literally and literary-ily) , and Mezza Italiana beat Heartless by a nose.

Mezza Italiana is heavier, by far, and maybe not the flying fluff I usually read (XXX to Evanovich), but it is related to my day job and tax deductible. It also looks like one of those mouth wateringly yummy travel-and-find yourself books that are so popular. A bit like Under the Tuscan Sun, eh?

Heartless by Alison Gaylin does look like fun; put out by the Little Black Dress publishers. Has anyone read any of their books?

Mezza Italiana was more expensive, but will take me longer to read. It's got gorgeous photos on the cover (no camera with me, so no photo unless Lesa adds one!)

Which one would you choose? I'll let you know if I've made the right decision…

  1. Photos added! I even added one of you on the jet-- that is you waving in the window, isn't it?

How does a bookworm forget to bring books? boggles my mind!! I have forgotten toothbrushes but never books!

Mezza does have a gorgeous cover. But both books are appealing-- I'd probably have to get both to cover all reading moods.

    Have a fun safe adventure!

  2. I'd pick Mezza Italiana I think. Judging the book solely by the cover, this one appeals to me more. Have a great trip.

  4. Yes, I agree with Lesa, when in doubt get both!
I really like the Mezza Italiana one. It looks like you could get lost in it...

  5. Mezza Italiana looks like a kind of book I'd love to read even after the trip! Looks like a nice coffee table book too. But Heartless just fits the whole "travel, light, summer read" to me.

    GET BOTH.

  6. I haven't heard of either book, but I think I'd go with Mezza Italiana. I hope you enjoy it! :)

  7. Thanks, all! I haven't gotten to read much of anything, but Mezza Italiana has started really well. I will keep you posted.

I confess that I wouldn't choose either of them! =P I've always found it difficult to read during a long flight. So I watch one of the movies, listen to music, or find some other diversion instead.

But there is a kind of romance in those airport kiosks, isn't there? I've always wanted to buy a book from one of them (and always ended up backing off because they were always priced above my budget). Nevertheless, I have this idea that a book you buy at an airport and read while you are traveling will have more power than a book you buy under more ordinary circumstances. Be sure and let me know if it's true for you, DeLynne! ;-)

PS -- Under those "ordinary circumstances," I would pick Mezza Italiana. When memoirs are good, they are very good!

  9. En, I still have not had time to read! According to my travel journal I haven't yet left home. My blog does have a few photos, though, so family know I am still alive...
