Off the Beaten Page at Tangalooma Resort

Eva, a staff member at Tangalooma Resort on Moreton Island was reading at a sunny picnic table during some time off.

What are you reading? A Korean book by Han Bi-ya (she had to write it for me, since it was all in Korean script). The English title is Marching Off the Map.

What will you read next? The Secret, there's a movie I want to see.

Why do you like to read? It makes me think about something else. Like this book tells about Iraq, and a woman saving the world.

I had to do some research on the net. In Korea name order is reversed, so Han is the author's family name. Han Bi-ya appears to be a very popular and influential woman in Korea. The book Eva was reading is about refugees around the world.

Are any readers familiar with The Secret? Do you think I have the book Eva was talking about? It looks like one amazing self help book!

  1. I was just talking with someone last week who believes very firmly in the power of "The Secret." As he says, you can't think you're going to be president, if you're not a politician. But he's in sales, so he sets what he feels are realistic targets for himself, he writes them down and he says that power of positive thinking has taken him far.

In my case, I'm absorbing a different self-help book -- a very powerful one, too, I think. It's "Streetwise Spirituality" by Carol Marleigh Kline and it takes a step-by-step approach to helping us deal with difficult relationships and feelings and other personal and professional disasters. You can think of it as the "owner's manual" every woman wishes she'd been born with. The women in the stories that are in the book share their own tales, unvarnished, funny, sometimes painful and always illuminating and enlightening. And it shows how the spiritual is absolutely relevant in modern life. We have the power to make our lives more vibrant and meaningful with a spiritual perspective.

  2. Just glanced at the link and I immediately thought "Scam"-- reminded me of the Blair Witch Project. ;o) Probably a great hook though-- wish I could think of a great self-help angle-- maybe I could end up on Oprah! I'm too much of a Dr. Phil type person and he already has that gig. ;o)
