Fruits- by photographer Shoichi Aoki

My sister and I used to fight constantly over who would get to keep this book, week after week. Another art gallery buy, the glossy pictures, short, sharp sentences and vibrant colour, it was the kind of book you were drawn to from about the ages of about 2-13. But this book is not aimed at any age in particular.

Fruits is a collection of photographs of Japanese street style, complete with small descriptions of every look at the bottom. According to the unique individuals photographed, their ensembles are representing a personal point of fashion, from "fluffy alien" to "harmony and unity". The western clothing that you see everyone except these people wearing has only been mainstream in Japan for about fifty years and considered very conservative. The strange outfits of these people are mostly handmade and most link back to their traditional culture- kimonos in bright colours.

This book makes you laugh occasionally, think often and smile at every page. Definitely worth reading, even if you just want to see the boys with  funny hairstyles.

X.

  3. What I find interesting about the people in the book is that they look so unique and outrageous, but usually match the person next to them. They coordinate their outfits with their bestie or boyfriend.

Oh, you're right! I hadn't noticed. =D How friendly of them!

My mother likes it when everyone in the family wears outfits that match--but we only let her do that on special occasions! =P As for me, I like it when my outfit matches my books.

  5. That is cool that they match their friends!

I like a matching family-- only colors though not all the same shirts-- that would be dorky!! ;o)

I used to coordinate colors with Talon when he was an infant-- well, carrying him was like carrying a fashion accessory!

We do still coordinate colors as a family at times and tease the odd man out who clashes.

I try to coordinate my books and outfits, although that doesn't always work!

And my mother is really into not simply coordinating, but identical outfits for her children. It was okay for my brothers, because they're only one year apart; but my sister and I are seven years apart, and she had us wearing the same dresses every Christmas until we finally figured out how dorky it all was!
