Do you know what a slush reader is? I didn't but that is no surprise since I know next to nil about the publishing industry. For any fellow dunces out there, a slush reader is a person who weeds through a magazine's submission pile.
Owl wrote an informative and humorous article about her job reading submissions for a memoir magazine.
Owl Reads: True Confessions of a Slush Reader
You must read the article to find out how long Owl's vow of 'kindly slush reader' lasted.
Due to the response Tracy's recent call to write received, I thought the writers amongst you might particularly enjoy reading about the 'almost piece' and the 'seven writing sins' that made poor Owl a hater. (She is a writer too so don't worry-- she isn't too harsh!)
Enjoy! And tell Owl that Lesa from Mrs. BG sent you over to visit!
Oh yes, please visit Slush Pile Hell too-- I just discovered it while researching slush reading. Such a hoot!
Welcome! Join us in a celebration of all things reading! Six friendly blatantly bookish ladies banter about any book related topic that tickles their fancy: fiction(all genres/ages), non-fiction (memoirs, fashion, food and more), Kindles, bargain books, reading nooks, bookish baubles and decor, libraries and bookstores, gifts, tea, adventures, flights of fancy and, of course, the quest for Mrs. Baja...

Hey, Lesa, thanks for making me laugh! Those sites are both really funny. I think that some of the stuff on Slush Pie Hell was made even better through the help of a computer language translator.
ReplyDeleteTake care,
Kathy
morning to do list:
ReplyDelete1) wish someone would bring me coffee
2)accept that no one is going to bring me coffee
3) go learn how not to annoy people who might be reading something i might write.
Thanks for the shout-out!
ReplyDeleteI love, love, love the slushpile site.
Fellow dunce, here! I had no idea there was such a termn!....at first I thought it sounded rather insulting towards people who make submissions. But then, I recalled the times I've gone through reams of nonsense when putting together my college magazine, and figured that this was actually an appropriate term!! :D
ReplyDeleteAm off to read the above mentioned blogs.:)
Oregon Kathy: Glad you got a kick out of it!
ReplyDeleteOwl: You are very welcome!
Risa: Yay, we can start a dunce club!
Lol! that should be interesting!=))
