Bargain Book Bonanza (11): Jane Austen Edition

 Welcome to Bargain Book Bonanza!

A book haul linky party for bargain loving bookworms!

BBB is the place to showcase all the great books (new, used, vintage, electronic, audio) that you have scored on sale.

Each Monday through Thursday, all book lovers are invited to carouse, make merry and revel with bargain book abandon!

Want to join the party? Just visit the Bargain Book Bonanza page for the particulars.

Lesa is hosting this week!

Oh, brave bargain book lovers, don't wince!

After last week's marathon BBB, I wouldn't blame you for being gun-shy but I promise to be brief... brevity is the soul of wit, after all.  Ha! If that is true,  I must appear a real lackwit on a regular basis!

So a promise is a promise, this BBB consists solely of one single solitary book. Yep, one. But there is a catch...

This book is a three-fer! Three Jane Austen novels in one volume! Just can't quit my cheating ways, eh Leslie?

So where did I find this hefty little jewel?

At an actual antique store with antique store prices.

We are such hooligans in antique stores that I always try to purchase at least a small something--- thank goodness, I spotted this inexpensive book!

Typically, I would never pay $4.50 for a used book at my usual thrifty haunts but this one appears unread and divvied up between three novels--not bad.

The selection of novels is ideal! I owned none of these and I've never read Northanger Abbey (saw the 2007 film).

Don't you just love the cameo on the cover?

And this book is delightfully illustrated-- you know how I love picture books!

Both of these illustrations come from Sense and Sensibility.

Look at that lush garden-- This gardener has no business lamenting!
I am so pleased to find this book. Now I only have to hunt for Mansfield Park.

Do you own all the Jane Austen novels?

Thanks for reading!

If you have a bargain book, please share. We love to brag on bargains!

  1. Oh, how I love Jane Austen! Her novels are so full of wisdom!
My bargain book would have to be the Little Women novel I am reading at the moment. I have a lot of copies but this one is my favourite. I got it for 50 cents at an op-shop. I love old books, the smell, the stained and crinkled pages and the knowledge that someone else before you has enjoyed it adds to the story.
Thank you for including Jane Austen!

  2. +JMJ+

This find reminds me of the six-novel Jane Austen omnibus that a friend gave me on my birthday when I lived in New Zealand. She had found it in what Kiwis call an "opp shop"--a place where one can buy pretty much any used (or "pre-loved") items, but especially books!

The illustrations, in turn, remind me of my illustrated Little Women and Little Men. Their drawings were done by Anna Marie Magagna (sp?). =)

Northanger Abbey is a light, funny satire. I didn't care for it much the first two times I read it, but I really enjoyed it the third time, which was just last year.

Thanks again for hosting this fun linky party, Lesa!

  3. I can't believe that I didn't leave a comment, sorry. I tested my link and never came back.

It has been a long time since I have read a Jane Austin book. You did great on finding this one ... the illustrations are cool too.

    Thanks, Lesa!

  4. Believe it or not, I just started reading P&P the other day and I like Elizabeth much better than I liked Emma. shocking...

  5. Maria: I feel the same way about old books. Since you don't post books on your blog you may have to to a guest BBB post on Mrs. BG and show off some of your op-shop finds!

    Anna: Thanks!

  6. E: Six novels in one! Now that't hefty! And I thought reading mine would be a workout!!

These illustrations are by Hugh Thomson-- he worked for Macmillan in the late 1880s and drew for lots of books including Gaskell's Cranford series.

Thank you for joining the party-- it's a small party but we do have fun, don't we.

  8. Tracy: That is so cool!! You will enjoy the entire book much more than Emma, I bet. P&P is my #1 fave.

  9. Tracy, by far, Lizzie is my favorite Austen character.
Lesa, VERY cool...you are still a cheatah! LOL! But I forgive you, because this was a great deal!

I believe I lent my P&P out, and never got it back...so perhaps it is time for a trip to the bookstore.
I have Northanger Abby, I believe, and Emma. But I would LOVE a book like E's - all 6 novels! I may just look for one!
If it ends up being a bargain, I will let you know! ;)

  10. That's a gorgeous version!

Whenever I go to a used bookstore or a flea market, I always try to find another version of Jane Eyre - which is my favorite Classics novel. Is it just me or is it especially exciting to find different covers, version, and editions even though it's just one book? Haha. I just feel like each have something extra special about them. I have about 4 versions of Jane Eyre, and I'm still collecting others. That may be bad though...

  11. Leslie: Me too! but I'd like to have gorgeous leather bound editions of each book too. Maybe Jillian has the best idea-- buy them all!!

Jillian: Oh yes, it is very exciting! And Maria the first commenter feels the same way and buys editions of Little Women-- I love that blogging allows all us book obsessed people to connent!! (btw, she has a beautiful fashion blog w/vintage leanings that you might like)

I don't collect any particular book but I have serendiptously ended up with several copies of Little Princess. One has a particularly interesting forward that I should post about sometime.

  12. How fun is that -- A great find! I loved all those JA books. Enjoy!

  13. What a lovely find! I actually don't have any Austen on my current shelves. Most of the ones I've read were my mother's and I had a copy of Emma but I lent it to a friend and it was never returned. I think I have all Austen's works as eBooks now so it's hard to justify buying paper copies of them when there are so many other new books I want to buy, but perhaps I'll keep my eyes out for bargain copies as well!

  14. Oh, at $4.50 that is definitely a bargain! It's just beautiful.
